Sanctuary de la Virgin de la Esperanza was carved out of the rock from 1786-1840 and is built into the mountain.
Entering the “shrine” is an awesome experience. There is an eerie feeling inside - it seems steeped in history. The cool temperature is the same all year round and it is still utilised as a church as well as a tourist attraction.
This monumental piece of architecture was carved by hand. Very little has been added to the sanctuary in the past few hundred years though it is strange to see an old-fashioned fan on the wall noisily blowing cool air over the congregation or the plastic chandelier hanging from the centre of a bubble-like carved ceiling. Climb the stairs, look out one of the quaint little windows at the view of the river valley and the centuries old trees gently swaying in the breeze.
Thousands of pilgrims visit the sanctuary during the many religious festivals and most light candles for loved ones. Make sure you have small change if you want to perform this ritual as candle purchasing is a must.
Once outside again, look high - the building extends upwards into the rock. Take a walk up the carved steps and, if feeling energetic, climb the hillside for magical views of the valley below.
The river flows by the Sanctuary and in winter this is very fast flowing and the current is strong. Kids cannot resist jumping in for that thrill of being carried away by the waters. Enjoy the BBQ facilities under cover of the huge majestic trees surrounding the whole area or take a picnic basket.
